Vegas - A Place of Many Faces

The best part of Vegas was seeing Joe's grandparents - Joe and Gloria.

They have been married for 68 years!

We enjoyed visiting with them and hearing stories of how they met, marital advice and growing up and living in different parts of the country.  Crazy grandma driving through the desert stories and old pictures.  He takes wonderful care of her!

The other side of Vegas was the Strip - with lots of casinos and tons of people.

The Eiffel Tower and the full moon.

Another side of Vegas we saw was Fremont Street - which we visited on Saturday night - where you saw things that were weird and just not right and made you want to poke out your eyeballs.  And on Fremont Street - that's just normal.  People walking down the street with giant plastic Eiffel towers filled with beverages - wearing them on their shoulders like a briefcase.

A Vegas website describes Fremont Street "This is the land of ultimate debauchery where the once glittery and glamorous meets the just plain weird."  YUP

One cool part was the world's largest projection screen - 90 feet above the ground and five football fields in length.  It is curved and has more than 12 million LED modules - it projects a choreographed music show.  There were also several Irish bands - since it was near St. Patrick's day.  They were pretty good - bagpipes and Irish dancers.

It was refreshing to go to church on Sunday - to get your mind to normal, to meet people who live in Vegas that are "normal"

At the Bellagio, more than a thousand fountains dance in front of the hotel, enhanced by music and light. The display spans more than 1,000 feet with water soaring as high as 460 feet into the air.  I found the picture online - my picture was kind of dinky.

Fish in the pond.

The Bellagio also has a 14,000 square foot conservatory which is maintained by a horticulture staff of 120 - very pretty.

Accommodations were hard to come by without spending a fortune - it was March Madness, ComiCon and Spring Break.  We stayed at the Stratosphere - after all the great places Tom found on AirBNB - the Stratosphere was ... well ... the bed was really comfortable.  We were right across the street from the Cannabis dispensary and the Elvis Wedding Chapel - where you could also get fake wedding photos ... because ...

A stay at the Stratosphere gets you admission to the top - all fear of heights aside - we did it!

They even have rides at the top that dangle, swing, and shoot you to the top, over the edge, or down the side - no thanks!

We did a hike in Red Rock Canyon, Nevada - pretty and hot.

The last day we checked out a new park - it doesn't have a visitor center - nothing.  It's located right in North Vegas - next to a housing development and a school.  Just a fence and this sign - it is open to walk through and explore, which we did.  We saw lots of garbage, and found "markers" but we don't know what they mark.  Prehistoric tusks and lots of cool stuff has been found - we probably walked over fossils and didn't even know it.  We'll have to come back when they build a visitor center and park rangers.

Leaving on a jet plane ... until the next adventure.
